Carnival calls for a bold and bright corset. With this in mind, read on to discover all you need to know about Carnival, as well as style inspiration and ideas…
Carnival in a Nutshell…
Carnival is celebrated by many different cultures across the world, with the most famous celebrations being the Rio De Janeiro Carnival, Mardis Gras in New Orleans, and the Notting Hill Carnival.
Carnival is a Catholic event by origin, but can also be linked with European pagan traditions. The original carnival festival was focused on food, as this was the last time you could eat freely before the 40 days of lent. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, following Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is also when Mardis Gras is celebrated, which translates to mean ‘fat Tuesday’ in French.
The unique characteristics of the original Brazilian Carnival come from a cultural clash between the Africans and the Portuguese. Overtime music styles, customs and dress merged to create the iconic carnival culture that we know of today. What hasn’t changed is the carnival tradition, which is still to get together once a year and party and celebrate through the streets.
The most famous UK based carnival is Notting Hill, which this year will start on Monday the 24th of August and end on Monday the 26th. Taking place on the streets of London since 1966, Notting Hill Carnival embraces cultural diversity, artistic talent, creativity, and enhancement of community spirit. Carnival is all about coming together, embracing your creative spirit, getting dressed up and enjoying yourselves among like minded people.
Corsets for Carnival…
Carnival dress varies a little from each celebration, but generally it’s flamboyant, bright, bold, playful and just plain brilliant. If you are planning on attending one of the carnival celebrations this year, it’s worth planning ahead when it comes to your perfect carnival outfit. Most of us will just attend one celebration each year, so grab the opportunity with both hands and go all out on your carnival look.
Headdresses, bright colours, corsets and embellishments are all a must if you want to go all out. The perfect place to start when it comes to creating your carnival look is with your corset, as this will form the base of your outfit. For a modern day carnival look, corsets can be teamed with sequin shorts or similar, finished with a feathered or embellished headdress. Carnival doesn’t mean you HAVE to show up in tiny shorts and oversized headdresses. Carnivals are all about celebrating diversity, so if playing dress up isn’t really your thing, consider a more casual carnival style, with a nod towards the traditional carnival look. Try pairing a team of skinny jeans and flat sandals with one of our instant shape corsets, finished with a bright embellished bag.
For a strapless style, we love the Blue with Gold Brocade Pattern Overbust Corset. This beautiful style perfectly combines bold carnival colours of electric blue and gold and will add a touch of flamboyant and bold style.
If you’re looking for a summery style that you can wear outside of carnival too, the Birds of Paradise Cold Shoulder Corset Top is ideal. Tropical birds inspire a lot of carnival style, with bright and bold feathers being used to create height and drama. This pretty corset top gives a nod to the look, while also being ideal for everyday wear with a pair of skinny jeans.
Leopard print is also a great option for carnival. Try our Leopard Print Satin Corset Top, teamed with bright leather look trousers for the ideal day-to-night carnival look.
Whatever you choose to wear to carnival, allow yourself to be bold and playful with your look. Embrace the opportunity, and enjoy what’s set to be a great year of carnival celebrations.
